Schomberg, Frédéric-Armand, duke de

   marshal of France
   Of German origin, Frédéric-Armand, duke de Schomberg (or Schonberg), was born in Heidelberg, Germany. He fought in the service of William of orange, then of France, and took part in the Battle of the Dunes (1658). He won a victory over Portuguese forces at the Battle of Viçosa (1658) and was made a marshal of France. Forced to flee because of the revocation of the edict of nantes, marshal Schomberg became an adviser to William III of orange-Nassau. He was killed at the battle of the Boyne.
